Shopping Guide: Fabric in Divisoria | What Else Michelle

Fabric Shopping: Divisoria

The hubby and I made another trip to divisoria yesterday to buy the remaining fabric and sewing notions needed for my sis-in-law’s condo. Originally, we planned to be there at around 7am but since we stayed late again the night before watching 1967 French film, Belle de Jour, we arrived in Divi at 10:30am.

Contrary to what we expected the streets were not crammed with people doing early Christmas shopping and the weather was quite shopping-friendly as well, not too hot and not raining at all. I found out through one of the vendors that most of the people were already in their respective provinces or busy tending to their departed beloved ones. So if you’re planning your next divisoria shopping, this is the perfect season if you hate the busy crowd and haggling can be quite easy. (The week of All Souls Day although most of the stores will be closed on November 1).

Yesterday was just my third time in Ylaya St. and was lucky to spot these fabrics. I’ve been looking for something similar to this and this for ages and was so happy to finally find one and even better, for a really, really cheap price of P50/yard. I would have bought more if only the hubby wasn’t paying. Can’t wait to start working on my living area. All I need now is someone to sew these for me.

Take note that these fabrics were from the street vendors not stores behind the street vendors (which are pricier). These are good for upholstery since they are heavy, canvas-like fabric. Why so cheap? I think they are left-overs from stores which they can no longer sell in huge bulk. So when you spot a good fabric, go grab it quick because it’s probably the last one, like the blue fabric I bought which had only 4 yards left. The 19″ embroidery rings, by the way, were from a store in Tabora Street. I don’t usually find this huge rings in malls so I bought two for my next DIY project.

Here are my best finds along the street of Ylaya. These are all printed canvas-type for P50/yard. I love them all. I wish I could buy a yard of everything.

I am so in-love with this black and purple fabric which would be perfect for curtains, throw pillow and even for upholstery. Looks expensive but it’s such a steal for P70/yard! I would have bought it if purple and black were part of my palette.

I wanted to buy burlap too for another DIY project and I found a stall somewhere along Tabora St. which sells burlap pouches in different sizes ranging from P25-60. You can also buy burlap cloth for P90/yd but with a minimum of 5 yards; jute strings for 3 for P100; and thick abaca ropes for P25/m.You can contact Mang Edong for orders at 0915 4404069.

BUT if you’re buying burlap cloth by the yard, I found a store in Ylaya St. selling burlap for just P50/yard. I cannot tell exactly where but it’s on the right side, somewhere in the middle of Ylaya, behind the street vendors. I think they are the only store that  sells native products like banig, sinamay, etc. There’s a store next to it that sells printed cotton fabrics, gina silk (P20/yd) and pajama fabrics.

If you’ve been to Cotton Depot in Mall of Asia or Glorietta 5, I also found a similar store outside CenterMall across the open parking space, Master Textile. The also have striped, polka dots, floral and plain colored cotton fabrics ranging from P45-65 per yard. I swear, this store is the cheaper version of Cotton Depot.

Last but not the least, if you’re looking for striped 300 thread count fabric like me which you would like to turn into a bedsheet or duvet cover, here’s where you can find one in Divisoria:

SMARTEX Enterprise: Stall C1, Sampaguita Bldg., 705 Recto, between Juan Luna & Ilaya, Divisoria, Manila. Tel. no.: 514-0391, Mobile: 09173537299.

Per yard is P350 (120 width), but they can give you lower prices if you’re buying more of course. There’s a store in SM North that sells this fabric for 550/yard. For 10 yards (P3,500), you can have a queen fitted sheet, a flat sheet (or 4-5 pillow cases) and a duvet cover.

Hi Ea! A little tip, if you’re planning a trip to Divi as a first timer, wait until the Christmas season is over so you can actually explore the stores. Otherwise, your first time might be a nightmare. :D

Hi Hanna! From the main entrance of Tutuban mall (escalator), just walk straight towards their open parking lot, no need to go inside the mall. If you’re unsure, you can ask the Manong Guard who checks the bags upon entrance. Master Textile is right across the parking lot next to the mall entrance.

    Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your blog, good work. I’m a Filipina living in Australia. Me and hubby will be in Manila Feb 2013. Shopping in Divisoria is in my to-do list to buy quilt fabrics. Do you know of any shop in Divisoria that sells quilt fabrics? I am looking for fabrics with oriental designs. Cheers

If you buy the really cheap fabric along the street in Ilaya, take a good look at it before they cut, as it often has misprints or dirt. Can’t really complain at those prices, but you may have to buy extra unless you want obvious mistakes/stains in the centre of your curtains! Susana, I’m not sure where to buy quilt fabrics in Divisoria, but a friend of mine who makes quilts swears by the stores near Taytay market. I mainly go there for jersey fabrics sold by the kilo but at 333 Rizal Avenue you can apparently get woven cottons in quilting weights really cheaply!

Thanks G! I found stores selling leatherette down the street of Juan Luna (the street before Ylaya, turn left when you see McDo.), average price P120/yard. You can also find faux fur of all kinds along this street. I didn’t find any leatherette in Ylaya so I hope you’d find what you need in Juan Luna. :)

Hi Danella. I asked a friend who is a regular divi fabric shopper for apparel. You can find P60/yard jersey fabric or P280/kilo. It really depends on the quality.

hi, got really excited when I saw your post about the fabric (Moroccan pattern)! been looking for that for months already. I haven’t had the chance to go to Ylaya for quite sometime now but when I did, I did not find that fabric pattern. I am also diy-er and an amateur one. Some of my diys are in my fb page. By the way, do you happen to know where I can buy curtain rings? The one that is used for roman shades where you insert the string pulley? Been looking for it and I haven’t found it yet . Will sure be following you time to time :) thanks!
